PART 2

He stopped when he saw the letters.

“You found them.”

Lily looked up through tears.

“Why didn’t you ever give them to me?”

He smiled sadly.

“Because every time I tried…”

“I thought…”

“A real father should be there.”

“Not write about why he wasn’t.”

He slowly sat down.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”

“I just wanted you to know…”

“I never missed those moments…”

“…by choice.”

Lily walked across the room.

Then hugged him tighter than she ever had before.

For several minutes…

Neither of them spoke.

A year later…

Lily graduated again.

This time…

From nursing school.

Before the ceremony began…

She walked onto the stage carrying a small cardboard box.

Inside…

Were all 1,462 letters.

She read one aloud.

Then looked into the audience.

Her father was sitting in the very front row.

Still wearing his old work boots.

When her name was called…

He stood first.

Clapping harder than anyone else.

Later…

Lily donated the letters to a local family resource center.

They were displayed under a simple title:

“Sometimes love sounds like applause.

Sometimes… it sounds like a parent quietly going to work before sunrise.”
