PART 2

One neighbor suddenly burst into tears.

She pointed toward a date in the notebook.

“September 14…”

“That’s the day my son received an anonymous bicycle.”

“He thought an angel had left it.”

Another man stepped forward.

“So did my daughter.”

Within minutes…

Dozens of people were searching the notebook.

Again and again…

They found the names of their own children.

Children who had quietly received bicycles during difficult times.

The old man lowered his head.

“I never wanted anyone to know.”

“I just didn’t want kids to walk five miles to school.”

The homeowners’ association president slowly removed the eviction notice from his folder.

Then tore it in half.

The following Saturday…

Something remarkable happened.

The entire neighborhood showed up at the garage.

Some brought old bicycles.

Some brought tools.

Some simply asked,

“What can we fix today?”

One year later…

The tiny garage had become a community workshop.

More than three thousand bicycles had been donated.

Above the entrance hung a simple wooden sign.

It didn’t carry the old man’s name.

Only six words.

“Repair a bicycle. Change a child’s journey.”

Sometimes…

The greatest neighbors…

Are the ones we understand last.
