She recognized the handwriting immediately.
“My father kept this with him every single day.”
The man smiled sadly.
“He passed away three months ago.”
She lowered her eyes.

“He told me about you.”
“But he never knew your name.”
The restaurant manager stepped closer.

The man carefully unfolded another piece of paper.
It was his father’s journal.
One page had been bookmarked.
He began reading.

A stranger reminded me that I still mattered.”
“She didn’t see a poor old man.”
“She saw a human being.”
The waitress covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I barely remember that day.”
“My father never forgot.”
The man looked around the restaurant.
“He spent seven years asking me to find you.”

The waitress slowly opened the envelope.

Along with a handwritten letter.

“Please tell her she gave me something much greater than lunch.”

The waitress quietly wiped away her tears.

The man smiled.
“My father would disagree.”
He reached into his briefcase.

It was a scholarship agreement.
His family’s charitable foundation had created a program in her name.

It would help students working low-paying jobs afford college.
The waitress looked at him in disbelief.

Hundreds of students had graduated through the scholarship.
